Hans left about a half hour, which means I am currently without a car. Normally, this would not be an issue, because I can just take the bus to and from school, but I start job training this week so I need a car ASAP. Plus, obviously, I just want a car. So naturally, I was thinking I'd reach out to Oppo for some help. Here are my qualifications:
-Must be stick.
-Must be less than 200 miles away. My ZIP is 06477
-Must handle well/be fun to drive. I'll be autocrossing this car a ton.
-Must be fairly reliable. I'll hopefully be autocrossing a bit, as well as daily driving it.
-I'd like a turbo, but don't need one. I'm ready for boost. Also very open to cars running ECU tunes, as ling as its a reputable company.
-Must have airbag(s). I'm 17, I don't need my insurance to cost any more than it does.
-Must be safe, or my parents won't allow it. I don't care what you say, NO MIATAS.
-Must seat more than 2.
-Must be unique in some way.
-Must be under $10,000
-Also need to have records of maintenance, timing belt done, and a clean title, but that's my job to find out, not yours
-Bonus points. I have a weakness for glorious noises. Exhaust note, spool noise, blower whine, a good blow off valve...I love it all. Performance mods are an even bigger yes, such as stiffer suspension, better brakes, short shift kits, rigidity, etc.
For comparison, here are two cars I've looked at/looked into buying over this past weekend. Thanks for any help, guys:
- !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! - Went and test drove this, even went as far as negotiating before it fell through due to a small fender-bender showing up on the carfax. An absolute blast. Due to the intake, you could hear the turbo spooling even on idle, and when you were WOT...glorious. Was really sad to walk away from it.
- !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! - It's a few towns over, the car is gorgeous, and has all the mods I want (basically everything from the TT- Intake, Diverter, exhaust, brakes. Doesn't have the suspension upgrade the TT did, but can seat more people way more comfortably). I emailed him asking for info regarding whether or not it had a clean title/carfax (didn't want the TT incident again) to which he replied that the VIN was in the ad and I should check for myself, and that it had a minor fender bender. I reached out to my friendly Opponauts, and learned that it had not had a minor fender bender, but instead had a Salvage Title. When I replied I was no longer interested due to this, I recieved a response that he was looking at it right now and there was nothing on said carfax. I asked for a copy, to which he replied "That's not allowed, I'd be happy to show it in person though." So forget that.

This though. I've been looking so damn hard. I can't find a good one that doesn't have over 100k, and I don't want to thrash on one with that kind of mileage, since I can't see parts being cheap.

Consider the Lexus LS430. It's reliable since it's a Toyota, and yes there is autocross street cred because you can get Bilstein coilovers for it!!! Oh man I'd love to autox one of these!
Another fun car would be the 05-06 Corolla XRS. I'd also suggest the 03-06 Matrix XRS and Vibe GT, but they are kind of tall, and some autocross and tracks ban SUV's and overly tall cars.
If you want something reliable, then stay the fuck away from any Audi or VW, *especially* those made from 1998-2005. It's the New Malaise Era, affecting German cars from the aforementioned years.
The 2001-2004 Volvo V40 may also suit your needs. It has a turbo and is very unique, plus the famous Volvo safety.
Mazda's Protege5 is also really cool and awesome.
Possibly an almost new Cruze or Sonic with that 1.4L turbo would interest you. They've been out long enough for used turbos to be available in your budget.
I've always liked the Saturn Astra as well. This one should be within the 200 mile range.

it's easier to live with than you'd think- and seriously, the 100k mile rule- Everytime my friends would hit me with that I'd tell them to fuck right off- as long as the car was well taken care of, who cares what the odo says (2nd most reliable car I've ever owned I bought for $300 and it had 358k miles on it lol) and I know barely anything when it comes to mechanical shit and was a broke ass hs student at the time lol

I want something a bit quicker than some of the previously mentioned cars. My first car did 0-60 in 7.5, my second car in 8.5. After driving the TT, which had actual power and torque, I fell in love. I'm not saying something that does 0-60 under 5, but just something with a bit more "oomph"

I buy my cars largely based on resale though. While I definitely agree with you (the reason I was seconds away from walking away with a 118,000 mile Audi TT running ~10 PSI more than it was made to) on the front of maintenance being the true determining factor, a lot of people don't. They're scared of high mileage regardless of maintenance.
I did just find this though. Very tempting.

WRX is a safe bet for that money. Just make sure it's thoroughly checked out before you buy. Although, if you can find a Forester XT, it's basically a WRX with higher ground clearance and more cargo room.

That A4 is probably your best bet, with all the APR goodies already on it, and Ultrasport. Plus the color, HNRGGHHHHHH .
Usually it seems that people try to get their cars back to stock before sale, so that's looking great.

-I've gone and seen that C30 in person. Liiittle bit afraid of the mileage.
-My dad just sold his '82 Mustang GT this weekend. It was for sale for 6 months, and the same happened with his Trans Am. He's on a "No muscle car" kick right now.
-The want for that Prelude. I'll have to talk that one over with my parents.
-I've always loved the Cobalts, but if I got one I'd probably prefer a turbo variant. Plus, the 2010s got Brembos, a major bonus.
-The place that has the Golf is fairly well known around here for being a bit "sketchy." That being said, my dad and I are supposed to go tonight to see what they've got. I wanted the 350Z, but for whatever reason he was against that, I don't understand why.
Very very good suggestions, all opened me up to new ideas, and the Prelude is a very real possibility. Thank you

That one's definitely out, unfortunately. Dude lied to me, and still won't admit it has a salvage title.
![]() 06/01/2014 at 12:40 |

True, they can be fine. But in my experience all of the 1.8t's are all clapped out from wanna be boy racers who spend more money on wings and wheels than maintenance. Also I haven't seen too many of them reach higher miles, I.e. 150k.

Find a last generation Prelude. Great cars, good reliability, and if you want a little extra in the handling department, there's always the SH trim with rear steering.
Tune to your heart's content, look good doing it, and it'll run forever.

I see your definition of "fairly" reliable is different than mine. I'll go look to see what I find.
![]() 06/01/2014 at 12:41 |

I wouldn't touch Audis if you're 17 or don't wrench. Maintenance is killer on them. I've looked at a handful of A4s, S4s, and TTs, they're all broken in some way.
I think the best thing to find would be a WRX.
Airbags, turbo, fun noises, easily autocrossable, seats 4, under $10k, fun, and almost always has a stick.
![]() 06/01/2014 at 12:41 |

The cars I mentioned aren't slow! Besides, if you're racing and modding it, the stock time doesn't matter nearly as much as the amount of aftermarket support :D
Even a V6 Camry is fast. For example, my 96 ES300's 0-60 is 8.3. Newer V6 Camrys even dip into the 5's! And they can be had in your price range, and would be very unique on the track and autocross!!!
The 2ZZ Toyotas' 0-60 times are in the low-to-mid 7's
The V40's time is 7.8, and remember, it does have turbo torque.
The Sonic turbo is in the high 7's, the heavier Cruze turbo in the mid 8's
The Astra is really the only thing on my list that's too slow by your standards. But the uniqueness should make up for it. The best part about the Astra is that it's only unique over here, as opposed to being one of the top sellers in Europe. This means ample aftermarket support while still having the rare exotic look you're after. Plus, it's just an early version of the engine now installed in base Sonics and Cruzes. I'd love to swap an LNF into an Astra, make my own Astra Red line/OPC
I also forgot to mention that the base Corolla, Matrix, and Vibe 1ZZ from 03-08 was available with a TRD supercharger, putting its power and torque on par with the 1.8T VW/Audi engine in the TT you like. Except with Toyota reliability. A supercharger is also available for the 2AZ engine on the 5-6 gen Camry, and also the Scion TC.
The Protege5 is probably the only slowpoke of my suggestions, with its over-9s 0-60 time.
I'm hesitant to suggest the Mercedes C230 coupe because of its New Malaise reliability (every bit as bad as Audi), but it is unique and cool-looking, and otherwise meets your requirements.
![]() 06/01/2014 at 12:44 |
|
I didn't realize those cars were that quick!
Plus you get the major reliability from almost all of them. Definitely worth considering.
I probably wouldn't doing much modifying myself, considering I'm usually afraid of putting money into mods that I may not get back upon resale. That being said, I'm not opposed to it...
Didn't we also get the Saturn Astra in a VXR variant?
![]() 06/01/2014 at 12:46 |

This was my last car. Aside fro standard maintenance, I think I put ~$300 in maintenance into it over the year that I owned it.

I saw this one, and I love the Mk4s too. But at that point, why not just go for a 20AE? That way, you get the sweet Recaros, suspension, good looks, boost, AND the fact that its rare, to help on the resale end.

I think Audi was really off their game though making B5s and B6s, but thats just my prerogative. The 1.8T has real sludge problems, I know
I've had three different variations of Subaru products (WRX, Legacy GT, and STi) and they've all been great to me. Also, for about $0 you can cut off that muffler and listen to boxer noises.
Theres some cheap ones around you I think

all of the above haha.

If you got one that's reliable, you are the EXCEPTION, not the rule. If you want to be able to beat on it and still drive to work the next day, I can't recommend a used viggen that may or may not have been thrashed without remorse before a quick polish and a "For Sale" sign being put in the window.

The engines are reliable, the worst things are the angle gear on the haldex AWD unit and the availability of struts if you need them (they are made in runs). If you maintain the car it'll be fine, I've found plenty of these cars over 150k miles.
All cars break

WRX is probably your best bet, even though I hate to recommend it because I'm very biased towards Mercedes. This is what I would go with... http://newhaven.craigslist.org/cto/4469239680
I know it isn't stick. But again, I'm biased. And they're rock solid as long as the transmission had been serviced regularly. Also, from what I've seen, prices are starting to go up. A few years ago they were mostly around 5k-7k. Now I'm seeing them sell for between 6k-12k. And dat exhaust note.
![]() 06/01/2014 at 13:02 |

-The Wagon is out. He goes to the local car shows every sunday night, and streetraces/thrashes the thing half to death
-The sedan, I emailed the guy last night and am waiting for a response. I really like that car.
I did the muffler trick with my Audi. Best thing I've ever done.

Cool - I'm also looking for a new ride, with pretty much all of the same requirements and within a similar price range. The airbag requirement is killing me. I've put months of research into this, and that seems to be the limiting factor if you're trying to have fun on a budget. Most fun stuff with a set of airbags is 15k+ (I want DS & PS bags though)
That said, here are my suggestions for ya. All are assumed to be MT
3.0/3.2 A4 - a decent amount of car for the $$, though manual examples aren't too common, and these are pretty porky
e36 328i (coupe) - very cheap. 6-7k should net you a nice sub-100k original example. A close friend of mine drives a 225k mi example (170 on the motor) slammed .5 inches from the ground and it still puts up with all of his abuse, parts are pretty cheap, quite fun to tear around in. handles excellent. very mod-able if you're serious about that autocross.
e46 330i - same idea as previous, slightly more powerful engine, somewhat heavier, far more modern
e39 540i - it's a 300-hp, rwd, V8 BMW. sounds like the f*** business with an exhaust. supposedly handles well, haven't driven one though. Maintenance is meh but totally DIY-able. a budget e90 M3. definitely my pick out of these options.
Older WRXs/EVOs are also an option. I just couldn't live with the econobox ints. 300ZXs are an option too, but rather heavy and difficult to find for sub 10k. good luck!!

well, that sucks. In here the most stolen car is a Honda Fit, somehow. Thief in my town don't have style, apparently.
How about RX8?
It's a 4-door rotary saloon, and those are surprisingly reliable.

Should I be afraid of the mileage though? I will be beating on pretty hard...
![]() 06/01/2014 at 13:09 |

haha I figured. Had to put my .02$ in. On a slightly different note, c230 coupes aren't bad. The biggest issue is the timing chain. Which sounds worse than it is, can be replaced in a few hours. I wouldn't personally buy one, but that's just because they don't fit my taste. They can be fun. A guy I work with has one. He's putting new tires on the back about once a year because he drives the sit out of it.
![]() 06/01/2014 at 13:11 |

Thanks!
My dad is pushing for an E39, hard. He insists on a 530i, while I'm a bit more hung up on the 540i. IMO, the 03 540i M-Tech is one of the nicest cars you can buy under $9,000.
All very good options though. Good luck with your search

Nah, I don't think so. If it's well taken care of, you should worry much til 180+, but its all subjective. Go drive them and see if it's a solid car.
I think the wagon looks in really good condition, despite the miles.

Just out of curiosity, why walk away from the TT you really want just because of a small fender bender? You could have it checked out by a mechanic if you were worried about sub par repair work. If it is the resale value you are concerned with, negotiate that into the price.
![]() 06/01/2014 at 14:01 |

I buy largely based on resale. At this point, I have owned and sold two cars, and between the two of them, have made $5,000 just by buying and selling. I want to keep building like this, that way I can buy better and more expensive cars each time.
Even if its just a small fender bender, it comes up as a full-on crash on the Carfax, typically scaring people off. I don't want to buy a car if I stand almost no chance of making a profit on it, and a high-mileage TT with a bad carfax usually won't sell very well

Do it! WRX's are the best. Except for insurance. And maintenance. But they're super fun.

The M3 looks familiar from something. Did it get FPed?

I wish. That mileage though...

1986 Porsche 944 (Probably a bad idea, but still)
2003 Mazda Protege MAZDASPEED (Fairly rare I think)
I could go on all day.

I think this would suit your needs the best.- 2007 Infiniti G35x
- Some of the things listed below don't need to be replaced if you are willing to do some dirty work (reconditioning the headlights, etc.). This has a clean Carfax record with two owners. Its also a fully loaded model with adaptive cruise control, navigation system, backup camera, sunroof, heated seats, etc. Perfect for autocross.

- It needs some work according to the pictures provided. This is what I think needs work..
-plastic steering wheel trim
-plastic front door trim
-plastic rear door trim
-new headlights
-new tires

Sorry... I completely forgot your manual only rule. My eyes have failed me once again.

Sorry... I just realized that one of your requirements where manual only. My eyes have failed me once again. (facepalm).

My mother drives a 2010 Forester. In 50,000 miles we have literally only done regular maintenance. The only extra cost was $6 for a burnt out bulb. That was it.

The SVX is perfect! They are super reliable. The only issues were terribly unreliable Auto trannys, but that has been gotten rid of!

They are insanely fun to drive.

That thing was awesome. I called, but its already been sold.
As for the 300zx idea, I wish. My parents want me in something a bit safer

It has airbags! I've been keeping track of literally every crash in my car group and no one has been seriously injured in no less than 5. Its a fun car.

I kid you not, I also thought it was quite familiar. Someone posted something of it I guess. Either way, it is better knowing it was owned by someone who respected it.

I did some research, the owner is from some car blog and the car was just in Petrolicious.
I'm now on the hunt for an E36 M3. The only problem is that all the good ones are in either Colorado or California, for some reason. This place isn't too far away, but the prices are kind of fishy. $15,000 for a Cosmos Black with 114k? $16,000 for a Technoviolet with 99k?
I need that technoviolet though. My favorite color on any car ever.

I dont even know what technoviolet looks in real life, and it has now become one of my favourite colours. I dont know if you would consider it worth it, but 5 grand is some amount of dough.

Technoviolet Overload:
Man, that Technoviolet is one of the mosr desirable BMW colors of the M3. Damn, I want it now for myself!
